Family and Friends of SCHS GEMB –

I have taught now for 20 years. There have been countless little things over those years to make me think I am having a positive impact on my students. This could be a nice comment from a student, a positive letter from a parent or when the band makes music in class to name a few. In the Arts we also have that magical performance. Well I would like to say we had that magical performance Saturday at the North Forsyth Invitation in Winston-Salem. The kids connected with each other and then with the audience. I was very proud of my students and parents for all of their hard work and efforts.

Two seasons ago our first Surry Central Winter Guard performed a song called “Proud”, by Heather Small. One of the lines repeated in the lyrics asks the question, “What have you done today to make me feel proud?” I was proud Saturday after the marching bands performance. I was proud of the focus the students had all week at practice and I was proud of the parents that worked hard behind the scenes to make it all happen when things had literally fallen apart.

I tell my students they only have control of their own performance. Once they come off the field they should feel like they did their best and nothing else matters. They do not have control of the judges or the other bands performances. Just do your best and the feeling you have once the show is finished is what you will remember most, even more than awards. I can not tell you what placements I have ever been a part of in my life teaching bands and even performing myself, but I can tell you about the incredible moments from certain shows.

All week long Surry Central Golden Eagle Marching Band and Band Boosters answered the question in the Heather Small song, “What have you done to make me feel proud?” On Saturday (Oct 24) they stole the show. Probably some of the best audience reaction of the entire day at the biggest show we have ever competed in (24 bands).

We were fortunate that day to place 2nd in most everything overall in Class AA out of (14 bands in A and AA). I was happy for that, but the moment I will remember was the journey it took getting there!

Thank you SCHS GEMB…. you make me feel proud!
