Audition Requirements – High School Band



Wind Instruments (To include all wind instruments and mallets)

Major Scales (40 pts.) Concert Bb, Eb, Ab, F, & C
Ranges – All scales should be played one, two or three octaves depending upon the practical playing range of the particular instrument and the individual student’s abilities. Two scales will be
chosen by the judge.
Rhythmic Pattern – All scales should be performed using “Honors Articulation”
Arpeggios – The arpeggio of the scale is required. Failure to play the arpeggio will reduce the score.
Memorization – Scales and arpeggios must be memorized.

Chromatic Scale (20 pts.) The chromatic scale should encompass the entire practical playing range of the particular instrument, but a minimum of one octave will be accepted.

Sightreading (40 pts.) Sightreading will be determined by the judges at the time of the audition. The selection will not exceed sixteen measures.

Percussion Instruments
Snare Drum: 1. Long Roll – 15 pts.
2. Flam Tap – 15 pts.
3. Paradiddle – 15 pts.
4. 5 Stroke Roll – 15 pts.
5. 9 Stroke Roll – 15 pts.
6. Sight-reading – 25 pts.

Timpani – Tune to pitch
Mallets – Mallet players may void other requirements if they will prepare a short piece demonstrating their ability.

Scales must be a minimum of one octave. Play each scale as fast as you can, but play it well. Memorization and arpeggios are not required. Students are to select the scales they wish to play (not the judges). They must select two scales to perform in the audition.

**Ties: Ties in the audition will be broken by determining the highest score in the order of sight-reading, scales, and chromatic scale

Please note: All auditions will be “BLIND”. NO RESULTS WILL BE POSTED ON THE DAY OF THE AUDITION. Results and scores will be sent to each director the following week. This will save time and cut down on the number of mistakes in scoring. All scores will be double-checked after the auditons, and all audition results are final! Additions and revisions may be made by the directors only.
