Most of my middle and high school band students know of Robert W. Smith as one of America's most prolific band composers today. He has blessed us with countless compositions for all levels. We have performed his music on middle school and high school concerts over the years. There is one thing you don't know about him from playing his music. One thing you might like to know. You will be happy to know this man made me ........do push-ups!!! Yes, that is right. Robert was my hornline instructor in drum corps.
In Suncoast Sound Drum and Bugle Corps, he was the driving force that motivated and inspired many young minds. He taught us "to be the best at what we do" and to "believe in ourselves". We learned there are no shortcuts to greatness as he instilled the value of family. His lessons went beyond the competition aspect, they were lifelong lessons. Many of his former students from Suncoast Sound and Magic of Orlando teach middle school, high school, drum corps and college bands. Some perform in well know groups. No matter what their current profession, all are successful in what they do because he and the staff members BELIEVED in us. On behalf of Central Bands, I would like to congratulate Robert W. Smith on this well deserved honor being inducted into the Drum Corps International "Hall of Fame" for 2010.
